Ultimately, the 2350dn offers an attractive combination of features. Depending on how much you print, the total cost of ownership-that is, the initial price plus running costs-could easily be less for the 2350dn than for printers with lower initial costs. Although this isn't unusually low for printers in this price range, it's lower than for most monochrome lasers that cost less. One other issue worth mention is the 2350dn's low claimed cost per page, at 1.8 cents. Photos are at the high end of the tight range where most mono lasers fall, making them easily good enough for printing Web pages with photos or a client or company newsletter. That makes the output good enough for any internal business use, up to and including PowerPoint handouts and the like. Graphics quality was similarly just a touch below the very best for mono lasers, although that's not unusually high quality, since you can say the same for the vast majority of the competition. It's certainly good enough for any business use, even if you have an unusual need for small fonts. I'd call it suitable even for demanding desktop publishing applications. Text quality in our tests was just a touch below the absolute best I've seen.

The 2350dn's output quality is its strongest point. That said, you should see something close to 40 ppm when printing files with text only.

Overall, the 2350dn's speed qualifies as acceptable but less than impressive. The Editors' Choice Brother HL-2270DW ($150, 4 stars), for example, with a 27 ppm rating, was significantly faster, at 11.7 ppm. It's not even hard to find less expensive printers with lower speed ratings that did better on our tests.

On our tests, (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing) I clocked it at an effective 8.8 ppm, significantly slower than the B431dn's 11.1 ppm. As I've already mentioned, the printer was slow for its 40 ppm rating.

I connected the printer to a wired network and ran my tests from a system running Windows Vista. The printer also comes with a duplexer for printing on both sides of a page. For offices with more heavy-duty print needs, Dell sells a 550-sheet tray ($99.99 direct), for a total 850-sheet capacity. The paper capacity is 300 sheets, divided into a 250-sheet drawer and 50-sheet multipurpose tray, so you can have two different types of paper loaded at once and change paper easily. However, it actually takes up less desktop space than many inkjets, which means it shouldn't be hard to find room for even in a small office where space is tight.
